Chapter 19
Severn
Solo delivered the tray of food, sliding it under the bars. From the bench, Severn eyed it quietly. The sandwich had all the crusts cut off, and that seemed like such a Solo thing to do that Severn couldnât help his smile.
âYou love Mikhail.â Severn lifted his head. âWe both know it.â
Solo glared back. Every day over the past few weeks, Solo came with food, and every day, Severn spoke to him. He never replied, but Solo couldnât unhear the truth. âHeâs in danger.â
Solo turned to leave.
Severn shot from the bench and grabbed the bars. âRemiel is reading the scene. Heâs calculating where Mikhail is weakest, so that when he strikes, it will be quick and devastating.â
Solo turned back, his russet brows pinched. âMikhail has it in hand.â
Heâd finally spoken, and now Severn had a chance to really be heard. âMikhail is a fucking mess. Somewhere in all that neurosis, he probably thinks he deserves to be killed for loving me. You have to help him.â
âWhatever happens is none of your concern.â
âSolo.â Saying his name pulled him back each time. Solo wanted to stay, he wanted to believe Severn. âDonât leave his side.â
Solo marched back to stand in front of Severn. âYour words are worthless. I look at you, and all I see is lies. And to think I admired you. Iâm disgusted in myself.â
âI careââ
âYou donât get to care for him!â
âAnd I donât get to choose who I love, else I wouldnât have fallen in love with a fucking angel!â
Solo lifted his chin. âYou are to be executed tomorrow at dawn.â
Severn let go of the bars and stepped back, rocking on his feet. âHow?â
When Solo turned his face away, his cheek fluttered. âThe edge.â
The edge was a terrible punishment. Spoken of among angels like a fledglingâs nursery rhythm. It hadnât been used in decades. An angelâs wings were tied near the shoulders, so they had no chance to writhe free, and the angel pushed from Aerie.
Ice filled Severnâs veins. âFor what crime?â
âYou seriously just asked me that?â Solo snapped, green eyes flashing with wrath.
âFor loving Mikhail?â He stepped back some more and threw his arms up. âGods, youâre all so fucking hypocritical. âAngels donât feel. Angels donât love.â Itâs bullshit and always has been. You think I lie? You lie to yourselves every day. I donât know what the fuck they do to you in Haven, but whatever it is, it screws you up for life.â He paced and then abruptly stopped. âIâm going to be killed for loving Mikhail. What part of that is right?â
âNo, youâre going to be killed because youâre the demon lord Konstantin.â
Severn grabbed a fistful of his own golden hair. âWhatâs this, then? Huh?â He pinched his arm, feeling the sting. âOr this? I donât know how it happened, but Iâm an angel. This illusion hasnât been an illusion for months. Itâs who I am now. My wings are gone. You saw him burn them. If this were an illusion, it would have come off.
